Buying Tips Before Buying a GPU for Ryzen 5 7600X

A good graphics card is the key to the ultimate gaming experience. But with so many different models and manufacturers on the market, choosing a graphics card for your gaming rig can be an intimidating task. Moreover, with the constantly changing landscape of technology, it can be hard to keep up with the latest and greatest offerings.

I’ve compiled a list of factors which you need to consider before buying a graphics card for your gaming rig. Ignoring any of these factors can result in a sub-par gaming experience or, even worse, decreased performance. Furthermore, I’ll also compare Nvidia and AMD in terms of their graphics card so that you can make a more informed decision.


It is important to know what resolution your monitor is because this will dictate the power of the graphics card you need. A higher resolution means that more pixels need to be displayed and it is directly related to the number of pixels that a graphics card can render.

There are three common resolutions which most gamers use and they include 1080p (1920x1080), 1440p (2560x1440) and 4K (3840x2160)  resolutions. It is important to know that 4K requires a lot of processing power and you will need a very powerful graphics card if you want to game on 4K resolution. However, most of the high-end graphics cards on the market can handle 4K gaming though you will have to lower some of the game settings (In the case of heavy graphics games).

If you are using a 1080p monitor, any half-decent graphics card will do the job but 1440p gaming requires a mid-range graphics card to achieve playable frame rates. A low-end graphics card can also do the job but you will have to make some sacrifices in terms of image quality and frame rates.

Monitor’s Refresh Rate

Refresh rate means the number of times per second that your monitor refreshes the image on the screen. A higher refresh rate means a smoother image. Most normal monitors have a refresh rate of 60Hz but in the case of a gaming monitor, there are monitors with a refresh rate of 120Hz, 144Hz, 165Hz and 240Hz available in the market.

To achieve a frame rate compatible with the refresh rate of these monitors, you need a very powerful graphics card. If you have a 60Hz monitor, any graphics card on the market will do a great job for you but to get a stable 144 or 165 frames per second to play your favorite games on a high refresh rate monitor, a high-end graphics card is required.

Even monitors with over 300Hz refresh rate are now available in the market. However, to get a stable frame rate on these monitors, you will need two top-of-the-line graphics cards such as Nvidia’s latest RTX 3090 series.

FreeSync and G-Sync

FreeSync and G-Sync are technologies developed by AMD and Nvidia respectively to eliminate screen tearing. Screen tearing is a visual artifact which occurs when the frame rate drops and it results in a broken image. This can be very annoying and it can ruin the gaming experience.

FreeSync and G-Sync were also introduced under the name of Adaptive sync which means that it synchronizes the frame rate of the graphics card with the refresh rate of the monitor. This results in a tear-free gaming experience. This can come in very handy when you are playing a game which is very demanding on the system resources and the frame rate drops.

However, these technologies are not free and you will have to pay a premium for them. FreeSync monitors are cheaper than G-Sync monitors but it only works with AMD graphics cards. The reason for the Freesync monitors being cheaper is that they don’t require any additional hardware in the monitor to work. Nvidia’s G-Sync technology requires some specific hardware in the monitor to function and this is why G-Sync monitors are way more expensive.

Clock Speed

Graphics cards are also differentiated in terms of their clock speed. Clock speed is the number of times per second that the Graphics processing unit (GPU) can process the image. A higher clock speed means that the Graphics card can process the image faster and this results in a smoother image.

However, while selecting a GPU from the same GPU family, the graphics card with a higher clock speed is not always the better one. The reason for this is that while the higher clock speed Graphics card can process the image faster, it also consumes more power and this results in more heat being generated. This can be a problem because it can lead to thermal throttling which means that the Graphics card will automatically reduce its clock speed to avoid overheating.

So, while selecting a Graphics card, always look at the benchmarks and reviews to see which  Graphics card performs better in real-world scenarios. If you want to buy a graphics card with a higher clock speed, make sure to get some extra cooling fans for your gaming rig.

Form Factor

PC cases come in a variety of sizes and the Graphics card you select should be compatible with the size of your case. It is very important to check for the dimensions of your graphics card including thickness, length and width. You should also check if the Graphics card has a dual-slot or a single-slot design. A dual slot design does not mean that the GPU will take up to expansion slots while it means that the graphics card can block the adjacent expansion slot due to its thickness.

If you have a full-sized ATX motherboard then you don’t need to worry at all about the Graphics card clearance but if you have a mini-ITX motherboard, then you need to be extra careful about the clearance. Graphics cards with a 200mm-220mm size can fit in most of the mini-ITX cases but if you want to use a Graphics card with a size larger than that then you need a full-sized motherboard along with a full-size PC case.

Graphics cards also come with multiple video output ports so that you can connect multiple monitors at the same time. So, always get a graphics card that has ports matching your monitor’s input ports as it can save you from purchasing expensive adapters and converters.

Video Memory

For an ultimate gaming experience, you need a graphics card with at least 8GB of graphics memory. However, for 1080P gaming 6GB is the ideal memory size while for 1440P and 4K gaming, you need a Graphics card with at least 8GB of video memory.

With the release of 4K monitors and ultra-wide monitors, Graphics cards with more than 8GB of video memory have become very popular. Thermal design power (TDP) is the maximum amount of heat that a Graphics card can generate while operating at peak performance. However, TDP also gives you an idea of the number of watts your graphics card needs to run at native settings.

Before the RTX 20 series, a 400W power supply was enough for most Graphics cards but with the release of Nvidia’s RTX 30 series GPUs, the Graphics card TDPs have increased significantly. If you’re using an overclocked CPU having 100 watts or plus power consumption and want to upgrade your graphics card to RTX 30 series, you’re going to need a PSU of more than 600 watts. In case, you also plan to overclock your graphics card, make sure to get a PSU with 1000-1200 watts of support.

AMD VS Nvidia

For a very long time, there was only one Graphics card manufacturer i.e. Nvidia but in recent years, AMD has also become a force to reckon with. Nvidia introduced the all-new Ray tracing technology in its RTX 20 series Graphics cards. This is a very demanding Graphics technique and it requires a lot of processing power to work. Ray tracing has been significantly improved in the new RTX 30 series  Graphics cards and this is one of the main reasons why these Graphics cards are becoming so expensive.

Team Red also integrated Ray tracing in 6000 series GPUs but these Graphics cards are not as expensive as Nvidia’s RTX 30 series Graphics cards. So, if you want to buy a Graphics card for playing games which support Ray tracing, then you should go for an Nvidia Graphics card. But, if you are on a tight budget, then you can also go for an AMD Graphics card.
